Can YouTube videos help your business show up in AI answers?

Research reviewed

YouTube is worth testing as part of AI-search marketing. But a cited video, a brand mention and a new customer are different outcomes. Here's the evidence we found, where it falls short, and how we'd approach a careful test.

The closest matching experiment: a vendor testing itself

Aristotle, Alexander and Hephaestion discuss a map beneath an olive tree.

In TRYSEO's April 10, 2026 account, Hannes Kaltofen describes publishing 25 German-language, AI-generated videos on a fresh anonymous channel. Titles and scripts matched the prompts being tested. Otterly tracked six AI platforms over roughly ten days.

The vendor reports ChatGPT visibility moving from 40% to 55%. That is a 15-percentage-point difference in its reported measure, not evidence of more customers. This was an agency's self-experiment, not independent causal proof: no randomized control is described, repeat-check details are unclear, and no lead or revenue evidence is supplied.

Its headline AI Mode uplift conflicts with the rounded before/after table, so we do not reuse the headline uplift percentages.

The useful question is whether publishing relevant answers merits a careful test. The experiment does not establish an expected result for your business.

Larger studies find association, not a publishing formula

Ahrefs' 75,000-brand analysis

Louise Linehan's Ahrefs study, published December 12, 2025 and updated August 12, 2026, analyzed 75,000 brands using Spearman correlation, a measure of how similarly observations are ordered. YouTube mentions in titles, transcripts or descriptions correlated with AI visibility at around 0.737.

The sample filters favored established domains. The mention definition includes third-party videos, not only a brand's own uploads. Larger or better-known brands may have more of both kinds of visibility. A strong correlation does not show that uploading videos causes a business to appear in AI answers.

A different Ahrefs sample in November 2026

Ahrefs' November 3, 2026 study examined 10,000 US brands against 260 million nonbranded prompts. It reported correlations of about 0.64 for YouTube transcript mentions and 0.75 for Reddit mentions. Its outcome combined observations from ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.

Those samples and definitions differ from the earlier study: transcript mentions are not the same measure as title, transcript and description mentions together. The figures are not a time-series performance comparison. Neither study proves that publishing videos causes improvement, and neither justifies calling YouTube the universally strongest factor.

Formats and platforms differ

In its August 12, 2026 analysis, Semrush reports that roughly 13% of citations from YouTube in an Enterprise AIO export were Shorts URLs, with variation across AI platforms.

The denominator matters: this is a share of YouTube citations, not 13% of all AI answers. Export denominators and collection details are incompletely disclosed. The observation does not show that short clips outperform longer videos, or that either format will earn a citation for a particular business.

TRYSEO, Ahrefs and Semrush all publish vendor evidence. Their observations are useful inputs to a decision, rather than independent confirmation of a promised outcome.

Our practical interpretation: expertise before a format

Start with something your business knows firsthand and a question a buyer genuinely needs answered. Explain the answer accurately, preserve the qualifications and keep edits faithful to what the expert means. Use a longer video where context matters; test a focused clip when it can stand on its own.

We would not copy TRYSEO's synthetic, repetitive self-recommendation approach. Real expertise should help someone evaluate your business, rather than manufacture endorsement. Recording, editing and publishing scope need to be discussed separately from the AI-search retainer.

For health or legal topics, involve a qualified reviewer and protect confidential or patient information. Do not place account passwords or private information in prompts, examples or demos.

How to test without claiming too much

Aristotle, Alexander and Hephaestion discuss a map beneath an olive tree.
  1. Define the comparison before publishing. Choose buyer questions, language, location and each platform or interface. A consumer assistant and a monitoring tool may not return identical answers.
  2. Save a dated baseline. Keep the question, assistant, interface, date and answer, then repeat comparable checks. Record what was mentioned and what was actually cited.
  3. Separate outcomes. A brand mention is not necessarily a link to a video. Neither is a view, viewer retention, a website referral or a qualified inquiry. Examine these as different measures.
  4. Keep a change log. Record site edits and other work happening at the same time. If observations improve, do not automatically attribute the change to video.
  5. Report uncertainty. Repeated comparable observations are more informative than a selected screenshot, but do not remove every source of bias. Show only real collected results and explain their limits.

Bring your questions to a conversation about fit and scope. The evidence supports testing video; it does not promise recommendations or customers.
